Best Water Distiller Reviews – Top Five Recommended

Does your tap water have an unpleasant after-taste? Do you prefer bottled water, but find the price prohibitive? Perhaps you live in a hard-water area, and your kettle is continually furring up with lime-scale?

You need a water distiller which takes your tap water and removes the impurities. We’ve searched high and low for the best water distillers.

And if you love a perfectly clear soup broth, you need perfectly clear water.

Regions with hard water have higher levels of calcium in the water that can collect around the kettle element, reducing the life of your appliance. A water distiller helps to remove all of the nasties that water purification leaves behind.

How does a distiller work?

Although tap water is deemed safe to drink directly from the faucet in most of the Developed World, it often still contains minerals and chemicals left over from the purification process.

A water distillation system is designed to purify tap water cheaply; with speed and efficiency. The distillation process requires a heat source and a condenser.

Water’s boiling point is lower than the boiling point of contaminants such as bacteria, salt, calcium, heavy metals, and phosphorus. When water reaches boiling point, it reaches sublimation (meaning that it converts from a liquid to a gas).

A water distiller boils water and routes the resultant steam through a condenser coil. The condenser quickly cools the steam down, converting it back into a liquid state.

As long as the temperature doesn’t exceed the water boiling point, this process separates the water from the contaminants, and you get perfect, pure water, free of chemicals and pollutants.

Water distillation happens on an industrial scale at distillation plants, which is in turn pumped through the water network and into your home through the faucet. However, along the way, it’s possible for the water to become contaminated (although this is unlikely). A water distiller in the home can further purify your mains water, removing limescale, and other contaminants.

How to distill water at home

You’re probably distilled water at home without realizing it. If you’ve ever left a pan of water on the boil and let the pan burn dry, you’ll find purified water in droplets around your extractor fan, and a dusty substance left in the pan.

The dusty substance left behind are the impurities and the salts that you want to avoid ingesting.

Distilling water at home is possible with a countertop unit. Most home distillers are batch distillers – a batch distiller requires the user to pour water into a reservoir.

A plumbed distiller hooks up directly to the water supply and keeps the distiller automatically topped up and providing a constant supply of pure water.

Many people prefer bottled water to tap water, but the non-biodegradable plastics used for the bottles has become a significant polluter of land and seas.  A water distiller is an excellent solution to this problem – you get healthy, pure water without creating the waste associated with bottled waters.

4. Most Convenient Water Distiller is Lightweight with Easy-Fill Reservoir

Most Convenient Water Distiller is Lightweight with Easy-Fill Reservoir

This is the second H2oLabs distiller featured in this article, but this model has a more substantial water reservoir and a sturdier build. This unit is an all-in-one machine – it looks a little like a coffee filter machine.

This machine is noted for its ease of operation and energy efficiency. The easy-fill water holding tank also includes a continuous feed valve, so you can just connect this to the mains and forget about filling it.

It takes roughly 5 hours to filter 1 gallon of water, so operation is probably best for over-night function. It can create up to 5 gallons of pure water each day.

With no filter cartridges to remove, this is a straightforward machine to operate with very little maintenance required.

If you love Colombian coffee, this water distiller will help you to make the best possible brew.

PROs

Simple plug-in-and-leave machine.

Water-feed valve provides a constant flow of water if connected

All-in-one unit – the water collector is contained within the footprint of the main machine

Capable of purifying 5 gallons of water per day

CONs

The water collector bottle is plastic, whereas the others in this article are glass. Plastics can leave a taste to the water, although most people can’t detect this. All of the plastics used in this product are BPA-free and food safe.

5.

The VEVOR water distiller has a 4-liter tank and a 750W heater. From a design perspective, this model resembles the CO-Z Countertop Water Distiller but is slightly cheaper.

However, the internal workings are made of quality materials (18/8 stainless steel), and the body exterior is made of baked-enamel metal. The plastics are entirely BPA-free and food grade.

This is a super-simple machine to operate. There’s a single push-button to switch the device on and off. The internal workings are protected with a fail-safe auto cut-off feature which prevents over-heating. The heater is controlled by a thermostat to heat the water to a precise temperature to ensure optimal purification.

The distiller and the carafe both have large openings to aid simple cleaning. The collection reservoir can hold up to 4-liters of distilled water.

The distiller comes bundled with a BPA-free water bottle, discharge cap, bottle cap, filter and power cable. Also included is a packet of cleaning powder to keep the reservoir hygienically clean; operating at its optimum performance. An instruction manual is also included.

CONs

The plastic water collector is completely safe for use, but some people are sensitive to the flavor that plastic can leave behind. Most people can’t detect any taste in the water, however.

So, which is the best water distiller?

We would gladly use all of these units. However, we have to choose one – our favorite is the H2oLabs 300SSE Best-In-Class water distiller with glass carafe.

We felt that the glass carafe is less likely to leave any unwanted flavors to the purified water. Although the BPA-free plastic carafes in some of the other models are decent, sturdy pieces of equipment, we felt that glass is always the best way to go; leaving absolutely no taste at all. If you’ve gone to the lengths of distilling your water, you’ll want the best you can possibly get.

Additionally, the addition of the activated carbon filter adds an extra level of purification. It’s hard to fault a machine that’s been tested so rigorously.

So, if you’re looking to reduce plastic wastes associated with bottled waters, but still demand the highest possible quality of water, then the H2oLabs 300SSE Best-In-Class water distiller with glass carafe is the way to go.

And if you make your own soup stock, then the 300SSE will help you make the purest stock possible.

Happy drinking!
