Tofu comes in different forms, including dried tofu, medium-firm tofu, fresh tofu, silken tofu, and many more. Silken tofu is one of the most popular tofu. But what is silken tofu?

What is silken tofu

Silken tofu is a popular type of tofu. As its name suggests, it is silky and soft. What makes it different from block tofu is the process of coagulation.

silken tofu with sesame and onion toppings

The soy milk is coagulated without the milk curdling first. This leaves the tofu looking silky and smooth.

The silken tofu is left unpressed, leaving it hydrated and full of moisture. This means that it will require you to handle it delicately as you’d handle eggs.  This is because it quickly falls apart.

Silken tofu comes in 3 different forms.

Soft silken tofu

Soft Silken Tofu is delicate and heavy. When you hold it, it will fall through your hands because of its water weight. To handle it, you have to be very careful lest it breaks. Do not manipulate it too much.

Soft silken tofu is ideal for smoothies, sauces, and dressings. Moreover, you can use it as a substitute for yogurt or eggs.

When prepping it, during usage, you should drain it and use it raw. Never press or freeze your soft silken tofu.

Firm silken tofu

This is a type of silken tofu that is made from denser soy milk. This means it has less water compared to soft silken tofu. In addition, firm silken tofu can handle more manipulation than soft silken tofu since it has a richer body.

The firm silken tofu is ideal for sauces that require the tofu to retain its shape.  You can also lightly fry it, boil, batter, or ferment.

Silken tofu is versatile. You can make many tasty dishes with silken tofu. These recipes are mostly easy to follow. Here are some of them.
